1400 Green Collar Jobs For Swing State Ohio

In a move that will reportedly create

1,400 new jobs

, General Motors has announced plans to invest $500 million inLordston, Ohio, where it will manufacture the fuel-efficient ChevyCruze.

For GM, it's part of its move away from gas-guzzling SUVs andtoward fuel-efficient smaller cars. The Cruze, which will beunveiled in October, is to get about 40 mpg.

These are the type of green collar jobs politicians talk about whenthey envision an economy that is more energy-efficient and fueledby means other than fossil fuels.

That's not to say this is a story without pain. As GM has shutteredSUV plants, workers have lost jobs — lots of them.

No one said the transition would be easy. Or, at least, no honestperson should have.

But GM's investment in this small car plant shows that big U.S.companies can make new investments that create jobs as theeconomy's energy underpinnings change.

As they used to say, what's good for General Motors...
